Dynamite outing for Elphin Lodge seniors

The Modderfontein factory was officially opened in 1896 and was the largest manufacturing operation in South Africa.

June 9 saw a cheerful group of residents from Rand Aid’s Elphin Lodge going off to the Dynamite Company Museum in Modderfontein.

While they were there, they learnt about the history of the development of explosives and chemicals in South Africa.

They were fascinated to hear the story of nitroglycerin-based explosives and how Alfred Nobel found a way of harnessing their power in a substance he called dynamite.

The Modderfontein factory was officially opened in 1896 and was the largest manufacturing operation in South Africa.

The group also enjoyed the historical exhibits at the Frans Hoenig Haus, which stands behind the museum.
