Spreading some winter warmth

Last week Khanyisa Soup Kitchen took its first delivery of freshly baked bread courtesy of Colcacchio Eastgate.

The delivery, which the restaurant has undertaken to continue on a weekly basis, forms part of the Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS’ Khanyisa Trust Soup Kitchen Incentive Project for Mandela Day.

The project aims to collect food items for the kitchen, which provides meals to approximately 120 people a day, five days a week.

It is estimated that approximately 70 per cent of the people visiting the kitchen on a daily basis are homeless, with approximately 30 per cent being unemployed.

These donations will be handed over by the NEWS in celebration of Mandela Day.

Readers can drop off donations at the NEWS’ office at shop 18A, Greenstone Crescent, Greenstone Hill.

In addition to the NEWS’ offices, drop-off points for donations have also been set up at both Edenmeadow and Edenglen Pick n Pay branches.

Edenmeadow Pick n Pay is situated in the Edenmeadow Shopping Centre on Van Riebeeck Avenue and the store can be contacted on 011 609 1170, while the Edenglen Pick n Pay is situated at the corner of Terrace and Van Tonder roads, Edenglen. The store can be contacted on 011 452 3191.

Glenvale Hyper situated at 19 Harris Road will also be a drop off point for soup kitchen donations. The store can be contacted on 011 452 1012.

Alternatively, Karaglen Spar situated at the corner of Baker and Harris Roads in Edenglen, will also be accepting donations for the Khanyisa Trust Soup Kitchen Incentive Project. The store can be contacted on 011 609 8677.

As well as serving a warm meal each day, Khanyisa runs an employment placement service.

“We work together as a team and have volunteers. Tomorrow’s menu is determined today and we are always in need of volunteers,” said Dipuo Tekana, the Khanyisa centre manager.

Leigh Evans, secretary of the organisation, has previously explained to the NEWS that the word Khanyisa means spreading the light, which is what the organisation hopes to do for those in need.

Khanyisa Soup Kitchen needs:

Non-perishable foodstuff such as rice, samp, sugar, salt and tinned foods including fish, beans, mixed vegetables, peas and corned beef, and dried vegetables such as sugar beans.

Since it is winter, there are a number of welcome comfort items that can also be donated, including blankets, scarves, beanies and socks.
