One suspect arrested in Kensington business robbery, four suspects are still at large

KENSINGTON – Johannesburg Central police have made one arrest following a business robbery in Kensington.

Following a robbery at a business in Kensington recently, Johannesburg Central police arrested a 28-year-old suspect.

“It is alleged that at least four suspects robbed a China Mart shop belonging to a 27-year-old female at about 8.30am on 6 June,” spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central police Captain Xoli Mbele told City Buzz, “The shop owner had just opened her shop for two of her employees when a man pretending to be a customer entered.

“The man allegedly pointed a firearm at the shop owner while an employee working [in a neighbouring shop] joined in. The shop owner was taken to a storeroom situated at the back of the shop before the suspects allegedly tied her hands, feet and mouth with cellotape. Three cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money were taken.”

According to Mbele, two of the shop’s employees were seen leaving with at least two assailants, following the incident.

“The two shop employees involved never reported for duty after the incident,” he said. “The driver of a grey Mazda 6 that was used as a getaway car was, however, arrested in Kensington on 8 June while his four accomplices are still at large.

Police have launched an investigation into the case, with one suspect expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court today (12 June).
