Twelve speedsters stopped in a hurry

"All the detained offenders were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Alberton and Bedfordview police stations."

Between May 26 and 28, EMPD officers from the speed section apprehended 12 motorists.

Media liaison officer Lieutenant Kobeli Mokheseng said the speedsters exceeded the enforced speed limit in the Bedfordview and Alberton areas.

On May 26, at the Grey Avenue off-ramp, four drivers were stopped for speeding.

One driver was caught travelling at 161km/h, while three minibus taxis were also stopped for travelling at speeds between 143 and 152km/h in the 100km/h zone.

On May 27, near the Gillooly’s Interchange, officers stopped a 64-year-old male driving a Jaguar sedan, for doing 168km/h,” said Mokheseng.

The man told officers he was rushing home.

Another two drivers were caught travelling between 164 and 166km/h near the interchange.

Sunday, May 28, at the Reading Interchange, five speedsters were stopped in their tracks.

One motorcyclist was clocked travelling at 182km/h, while the brakes were put on four others for travelling at speeds between 163 and 167km/h.

“All the detained offenders were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Alberton and Bedfordview police stations,” said Mokheseng.

The suspects are expected to face the charges at the Palm Ridge and Germiston Magistrate’s Courts soon.
