Music In Africa Foundation celebrates Africa Day

JOBURG – The foundation aims to promote the work of African musicians by providing a platform for them to share their music.

Africa Day on 25 May was not just a day to celebrate being African, but also to celebrate African music, style, culture and everything in-between.

Siemens Stiftung and the Goethe-Institut formed a partnership with a number of companies across Africa to launch the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in 2011, which later expanded to become a cellphone music app.

The foundation aims to promote the work of African musicians by providing a platform for them to share their music, but also offers education to the public or aspiring musicians who would like to learn more about music and culture in Africa.

The platform also aims to connect like-minded musicians, producers and talents with each other with the aim of promoting music collaboration in Africa and furthermore, expansion of African culture to other countries.

Some of the prominent artists involved in this platform include Goldfish, Yemi Alade and Davido – placing well-known artists on the same platform as up-and-coming artists.

On Africa Day, the foundation opened offices in Johannesburg, coinciding with the relaunch of the MIAF cellphone app.

The foundation’s director Eddie Hatitye said, “We are excited to launch this platform on such an important day for Africa. While the new website opens an endless list of exciting possibilities, the foundation will continue to produce authoritative content that has made Music In Africa the biggest and most reliable information platform for the African music sector in just under three years.”

Commenting on the contributions made by the foundation, Afro-pop musician Wiyaala thanked MIAF for its support and rapper and hip-hop artist, Nash, showed his appreciation for the content produced on the site.

“Thanks Music In Africa, for the vibrant tribute to PapaWemba,” commented Nash.
