Cellphone robber sentenced to 8 years

JOBURG – Ngcobo has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment.

The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court sentenced Njabulo Ngcobo to eight years’ imprisonment on 12 May for the robbery of a cellphone.

Ngcobo was arrested at Fairview on 13 January this year after robbing an AG cellphone worth R1 000 from a complainant. According to Jeppe police spokesperson Captain Richard Munyai the victim and a friend were walking along Jules Streets when they noticed two men following them.

He said the two women changed direction. “When they reached Fox and Grace streets in Fairview they saw the same men approaching them and one of the men pulled out a knife and demanded cellphones from the women. The complainant gave them her AG mobile cellphone,” he said.

The suspects took the phone and fled the scene. Munyai said police officers were driving past and the victim stopped them and reported the matter. She got into the police vehicle to try and find the two men. “They spotted them and arrested the one suspect,” said Munyai.

Ngcobo was taken to Jeppe Police Station where he was charged and detained. The other suspect is still at large.

“The case was investigated by Constable Enos Makamu. The 19-year-old was found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison,” said Munyai.
