Domestic violence awareness

South Africa has some of the most shocking statistics that illustrate the state of domestic violence in the country, particularly against women.

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said they have opened many cases of domestic violence at the station since the beginning of this year.

She urged people to seek help when they are having problems in their homes or relationships instead of resorting to violence.

“People must not wait until things get physical to get help. If you are having problems, you can come to the station as we do offer counselling or you can find your own private counsellor,” said Tsotsotso.

She said most of the cases they have received since the beginning of the year have been related to the use of social media.

“In the cases we have received, most couples fight because of social media. People are spending too much time on social media and the instant messaging application, WhatsApp, that allows users to exchange texts, images and audio messages,” Tsotsotso.

She said finances are also a contributing factor in the cases they have received.

“Some people are going through financial problems and that creates some tension in relationships and people start to fight,” she said.

She urged people to learn to control their anger.

If people need counselling they can call the Sebenza Police Station on 011 400 6000 and see sector manager, Sgt Barbara Tshunungwa or WO Cecil Jurgens.
