Ward 118 inspected
JOBURG – Ward 118 is inspected by councillor and Metro police officials.
Ward 118 councillor Neuren Pietersen, together with councillor Funzi Ngubeni from Region F and members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) drove and walked around Ward 118 to view, record and, in some cases, issued fines.
“In some instances, residents and traders were advised of the correct manner in which to go about their business in an urban-conscious manner,” said Pietersen.
The walkabout looked at:
- Cyrildene dumping and illegal trading
- Bruma drug dealing and trespassing
- Bruma South vagrants and crime
- Queen Street noise and potential abuse of trading licences
- Malvern dealing in drugs, illegal trading, illegal parking and moving violations.
Pietersen said residents and businesses have, over the years, become complacent in complying with bylaws, which are there to allow them to live, worship, play and work together in a mutually respectful manner. “For the last few months, the JMPD and myself have been placing more emphasis on enforcing bylaws. Consistent as well as random visible bylaw enforcement will ultimately establish a culture of respect for our environment,” he said.

Pietersen added that illegal dumping can largely be resolved through education. “We must all help to communicate the availability of wheelie bins. Residents must keep on the lookout for people stealing them,” he said. He added that they need to find out where they are taking them to.
Below is the wheelie bins application process:
- Log a call on 011 375 5555 and get a reference number [the city does not deliver the bin without the reference number]
- Have your rates account number ready
- Stolen bins must be reported to police stations and residents must geta case number
- The depot will deliver the bin to the resident once they have the reference number, at no charge.
- A bin will only be replaced once at no cost.
