#ICYMI: Three sentenced to two years imprisonment for possession of rhino horn and ivory

JOBURG – Johannesburg Magistrates' Court sentences Chinese nationals for ivory and rhino horn possession.

Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court sentenced Zhiaiang Wany, Jianghoa Zang and Mei Li to two years’ imprisonment each on 19 April, for possession of rhino horn and ivory.

The three were arrested by Warrant Officer Joseph Strydom and Warrant Officer Christo Barnard from the Benoni K9 unit in Cyrildene on 16 March last year. “The suspects were held at Cleveland Police Station where the case was investigated by Detective Constable Ronald Macheke,” said the station’s spokesperson Captain Johan Jordaan.

He said the three Chinese nationals were found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment each, suspended for five years, and a R100 000 fine.

Jordaan said after the arrest and a good investigation, the arresting officers as well as the investigating officer were applauded for their good work by the management of Cleveland Police Station. “It shows that cases will be properly investigated by Cleveland Police Station detectives when rhino horn and ivory are involved,” said Jordaan.
