The trust has organised an educational heritage walk on April 29 at 10am at the front of the museum at 2 Main Street in Modderfontein.

Keith Martin, of the Modderfontein Heritage society, said Modderfontein’s history is intrinsically linked to that of Johannesburg.

“Modderfontein owes its existence to the discovery of gold and the need for explosives manufacturing,” said Martin.

But despite the town’s origins in heavy industry, it has a distinctive village atmosphere.

“Many of the century-old buildings are still in use today, including some with strong Anglo-Boer war connections,” said Martin.
