Councillor urges residents to support the Clean Green campaign

KENSINGTON – Da Rocha urges people to stop dumping

Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha is not pleased with the progress of the Ward 66 Clean Green Campaign.

“Residents are still dumping on the pavements and the Metro police are not enforcing the by-laws on illegal dumping,” said Da Rocha.

Da Rocha declared war on dirt in his ward in the beginning of the year after noticing an increase of illegal dumping in his ward. The purpose of the campaign is to enforce illegal dumping bylaws and get the ward clean. “Residents are not supporting me in this campaign as they are still dumping. Illegal dumping affects all of us. If we work together as a community we can achieve a clean ward,” he said.

Pikitup also needs to play a role in keeping the area clean. The fact that many residents do not have rubbish bins and only use refuse bags, is a major problem.

“Rubbish bins will make a difference because the refuse bags end up being piled somewhere in a corner and cause a mess,” Da Rocha explained. He said household rubbish is a problem because it ends up on street corners.

“We have back room dwellers and you will find that five families live on that property. After accumulating rubbish they need to take it out. If you don’t have a bin, you will take it out of the yard and that is a problem because it ends up in the streets,” Da Rocha explained.

He said the Metro police must fine residents who are not respecting the bylaws. He thanked the residents who are supporting the campaign and cleaning up the streets.

Da Rocha said he really appreciates their efforts to ensure that Ward 66 is clean.

“We have a beautiful ward and I want people to see that and not the dirt. If people continue with illegal dumping the area will deteriorate and we don’t want that to happen. Let us keep Ward 66 clean and green.”

He urged residents to report people who dump in the streets by taking the registration number of the vehicles and, if possible, try to take a photo.
