The stretch of the N3 southbound freeway between the PP Cement and the bend just after the Rand Airport turnoff is notorious for horrific accidents mostly attributed to excessive speeding.
This section of highway was targeted by the EMPD High Speed Unit on Sunday, April 16.
The effort yielded seven arrests between 6am and 10am.
All seven arrestees were male drivers aged between 26 and 41.
The highest speed of 176km was clocked by a 38-year-old man on a Yamaha motorcycle who claimed that he was rushing home.
“The rest of the speedsters clocked speeds of between 161km/h and 164km/h who claimed that they were late for church services,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago.
The Germiston Police Station was their home for a couple of hours where they were charged with reckless and negligent driving before posting bail of R1 000 each.
They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
