174 arrests in 1 week

JOBURG – Thanks to great work from police officers, 174 suspects found themselves behind bars.

 

The Joburg East cluster arrested 174 suspects from 27 March to 2 April.

The suspects were arrested for committing crimes ranging from murder, rape and possession of unlicensed firearms.

The cluster is made up of seven police stations including Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Rosebank, Parkview, Norwood and Yeoville police stations.

The arrests were as follows:

  • 17 for possession of drugs
  • 6 for possession of unlicensed firearms
  • 3 for house robbery
  • 1 for rape and kidnapping
  • 10 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
  • 10 for theft
  • 5 for possession of a stolen motor vehicle
  • 18 for assault common
  • 8 for armed robbery
  • 1 for theft out of a motor vehicle
  • 42 for driving under the influence
  • 6 for possession of suspected stolen property
  • 1 for housebreaking and theft
  • 1 for murder
  • 4 for business robbery
  • 6 for common robbery
  • 4 for contempt of court
  • 16 for shoplifting
  • 2 illegal immigrants
  • 2 for trespassing
  • 1 for escaping from lawful custody
  • 2 for malicious damage to property
  • 4 for fraud
  • 2 for kidnapping
  • 2 for possession of dangerous weapons.

“Some of the suspects have already appeared in different courts. Some have paid fines while other cases were postponed for bail applications and further investigations,” said spokesperson for Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyai.
