PR councillor Nkwanyana remembers Kathrada

JOHANNESBURG – DA, PR Councillor Bongani Nkwanya remembers Khathrada.

As the nation moans the passing of ANC veteran Ahmed Kathrada, many pay tribute to the anti-apartheid struggle hero.

Kathrada died on 28 March at the Donald Gordon Hospital in Johannesburg. Kathrada had remained politically active until his dying day. DA Joburg Central Constituency chairperson and PR councillor Bongani Nkwanyane said the country has lost the father of democracy.

“I would like to convey our deepest condolences to the family of the stalwart of the liberation struggle for a free and democratic South Africa, Mr Ahmed Kathrada. The passing of Uncle Kathy has not only robbed us of a leader and anti-apartheid activist but, an uncle and the father of our democratic South Africa,” said Nkwanyane.

Ahmed Kathrada was born on 21 August 1929 in Schweizer-Reneke to parents from Lachpur, India. At the age of nine, his father sent him to family in Fordsburg in order to further his schooling. It was during this time that he encountered political activist Yusuf Dadoo. It was to the ‘Dadoo Factor’ that inspired Kathrada to develop a passion for politics.
