Local councillors highlight the importance to reporting potholes

“We are constantly asked, what we are doing about the condition of Edenvale,”

To prevent further deterioration of Edenvale’s roads, it is vital that motorists and residents report potholes.

Edenvale ward councillors Heather Hart (ward 18) and Bill Rundle (ward 19) met with the NEWS to discuss the importance of reporting potholes.

Clr Rundle said the municipality has an obligation to protect and maintain the assets of the municipality, including roads.

“Indirectly, these assets belong to the taxpayers. It is up to them to report potholes and deteriorating road conditions,” said Clr Rundle.

He added that the municipality also has to ensure that community members have access to a safe, secure and user-friendly environment.

The pair said because little has been done to address the potholes and other service delivery problems in Edenvale, they receive complaints from the community daily.

“We are constantly asked, what we are doing about the condition of Edenvale?” said Clr Rundle.

Clr Hart said that as ward councillors they are representatives of the community and escalate matters reported by the community to the municipality.

“As ward councillors we have two responsibilities: to represent the community, and legislative duties,” said Clr Hart.

Both councillors find the lack of feedback from the municipality concerning.

“We still have not received a full report of what will be done to address the damage of the November 9 floods. We have received some summaries, but nothing specific,” said Clr Rundle.

Clr Hart said since November Edenvale has received three heavy rainstorms.

She said for six months Edenvale was without a contractor to fill potholes in the area.

This added to the degradation of the town’s roads.

Potholes damage vehicles

Clr Hart said repairs to potholes have started because of the new appointment of a contractor.

She said progress on the pothole repairs will take time.

Both councillors insisted that, despite potholes being repaired, residents and motorists need to continue reporting potholes and obtain reference numbers. This will help in the repairing or escalation of the matter.

To report potholes phone the call centre on 0860 543 000, go to the Ekurhuleni Mobile app or SMS 30788.

“Community members need to have patience though as sometimes the repairing of potholes can be a lengthy process,” said Clr Hart.
