Residents invited to Bunny Hop reopening

The Bunny Hop is a non-profit organisation.

Come April 8, the Bunny Hop Haven will open its doors for the first time at its new premises in Observatory.

Bedfordview resident and marketing manager Ms Kelly Smit said all the animals in the shelter’s care were moved from the previous property last Saturday.

“We moved all the bunnies last weekend and could not be more excited about the move. The place is bigger and has more traffic. What’s also important for us is that parents whose children like to visit the shelter will be more comfortable to drive in here,” said Ms Smit.

She previously told the NEWS that people were comfortable to visit the shelter at the Sandringham premises for security reasons.

The shelter is a sanctuary for small farm animals and houses over 200 animals, mainly bunnies, rescued from across Johannesburg.

Founder Ms Andy Berzen said the grand opening will start at 10am.

“Fun activities for children will include face painting and a jumping castle. We will also have balloon makers, stilt walkers and Bugs Bunny,” said Ms Berzen.

The centre hosts children of all ages on weekends.

“We also aim to connect children with animals. We teach children how to care for their animals at home. We also host schoolchildren who are interested in interacting with bunnies and getting to know more about them,” said Ms Berzen.

Upon arrival, children are given a small bucket of vegetables to feed the bunnies, she said.

The Bunny Hop Haven is a non-profit organisation.

Ms Smit said on the day of the opening, an entrance fee of R40 per child and R30 per adult will be charged.

“We are at the Observatory Sports Club and we cannot wait to meet you,” she said.

The new address for the shelter is 59 Frederick Street, Observatory.
