WATCH: Two Metro police officers expected to appear in court today after alleged fraudulent activity

JOBURG – Two Metro police officers are to appear in court today

Two Metro police officers are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court today (20 March) facing charges of corruption.

This comes after video footage circulated on social media showing the two officers allegedly engaging in fraudulent activity. “The video shows two unknown men emptying their pockets to the officials inside the [Metro police] patrol vehicle,” said City of Joburg MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun.

The video is believed to have been recorded on 18 March near Albertina Sisulu Road in Bez Valley. Sun said he requested senior Metro police officials to trace the patrol vehicle and the officers involved after seeing the footage. “The [Metro police] internal affairs team and senior directors worked around the clock to investigate the incident,” said Sun.

The two officers were arrested and detained at Jeppe Police Station on 19 March. “They also face internal disciplinary processes and will be dismissed if found guilty,” added Sun.

This is a developing story.
