Request for volunteers

BELGRAVIA – Home in need of community support

The Cansa Keurboom Care Home based in Belgravia is looking for volunteers to join the liaison committee.

“[We are looking for] anyone who is interested in doing work for a good cause. We would really appreciate it if they could join our team,” said chairperson of committee, Sandi van Tonder.

The liaison committee is responsible for conducting health awareness drives, fund-raising, and supports patients. The home has been facing difficult times and a good liaison committee can do great work for the home in terms of coming up with ways of raising money for the home.

The home is a sanctuary for cancer patients going through treatment. The home was established in 1975 by the Rotary Club in Johannesburg. There was a need for a place where out of town patients could stay while receiving treatment for cancer – be it radio- or chemotherapy. The Rotary purchased the house along Main Road in Belgravia, which is an historical building. It was built in the late 1800s, and during the early 1900s, it was the official place of residence for the Netherlands Ambassador in South Africa.

The house takes up a complete block – Main, Scott, Princess and Priscilla roads surround the property. The home accommodates 25 patients at a time with a maximum intake of 30.

Most of the patients are not employed due to their illness and are unable to pay more than R200 per week for their stay.

“It’s costly to run Keurboom as we depend on donations. That is why we need a liaison committee that can fundraise so the home can stay open,” explained Van Tonder.

Patients stay at the home from Monday to Friday and receive treatment at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. They are taken to and from the hospital on a daily basis. Patients receive three balanced meals per day and the meals are adapted to the medical needs of the patient.

Van Tonder added that if there are businesses or individuals who would like to be involved in any way, it would be appreciated.
