The ambitious Thena twins

KENSINGTON – The Thena twins of Jeppe High School for Boys are passionate about cricket.

The Thena twins are a double dose of ambition, passion, and dedication.

Born in Dobsonville, Tebogo and Katlego Thena of Jeppe High School for Boys are making a name for themselves in the school’s cricket team.

“We starting playing cricket at the age of eight. Bakers Mini Cricket came to our school in Dobsonville. We were approached there – and here we are still playing our hearts out,” explained Katlego.

Asked by the Express what the advantages of playing the same sport together were, the twins were in agreement that they were able to motivate and be a support system for each other.

“We set goals for ourselves and encourage each other to achieve them. Hard work and dedication always pay off,” said Tebogo. Katlego, the batsman, said he had to work hard to get selected for the A team. “I used to play for the B teams. I used to feel sad and disappointed but I told myself I need to man up and work hard to earn myself a place in the A team and it finally happened.”

Tebogo, the bowler, said to be the best, sacrifices must be made. “I always try to improve my bowling. Even if we don’t have practice, I make time to practise on my own to improve my skill.”

The twin’s plans are to play cricket professionally and they hope to inspire other black children to play the sport. They said they looked up to the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Themba Bavuma because they prove there are good black cricket players.

“We would like to encourage those who are interested in playing cricket to work hard and dedicate themselves,” said Tebogo.

Katlego supported his brother’s statement and said he would love to see an increase in black cricket players and encouraged those who are already playing the sport, to work hard.
