Women’s network to be established

"There are too many women sitting at home with pain in their hearts."

In order to prevent women abuse, the Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit is hoping to establish a women’s network in Edenvale.

The network’s main priority will be to allow easier communication among women.

Sergeant Jacob Mashile, head of the unit and founder of the initiative, said he hopes that women will support each other through the initiative.

He said the slogan for the initiative will be ‘She is free and she is beautiful’.

One of the challenges women face, and which Sgt Mashile believes is not being spoken about, is domestic abuse.

“There are too many women sitting at home with pain in their hearts,” said Sgt Mashile.

Sgt Mashile said by having this initiative in Edenvale, women can unite and have a platform speak about the abuse which they may be experiencing.

Women will be given talks about different types of abuse at the launch of the event, which will take place on March 18.

Poetry will also be recited on the day.

Ms Rhoda Hill, a speaker at the event, said the event hopes to empower women and bring change to the community of Edenvale.

Ms Hill said besides providing women with a platform to raise their concerns, the initiative will offer assistance with healing after abuse.

“Through this event we hope women will speak out against abuse and find ways in which to deal with it,” said Ms Hill.

The event will be held at the Newday Church between 9am at 12-noon.
