Disability does not mean inability

JOBURG – Changing employers' mindsets about the capabilities of people living with disabilities.

Recruitment company Capability Careers invited companies to the Apollo Hotel in Randburg to highlight the capabilities of people living with disabilities.

Master of ceremonies, Vusi Mthembu said the event was aimed at spreading awareness about disability and its challenges. Guest speaker Dan Kekana said that, although he is unable to walk and run, he could still reach his destination in life. This was a sentiment he believed most disabled people shared.

He added that people in the workplace have to accommodate those with disabilities; the government has legislation and incentives in place for companies that hire and train disabled people. He also said people with disabilities were most affected by crime and poverty.

Capability Careers director Pascalle Jacquelin said, “My interviewers saw my disability first rather than my abilities.” This attitude, she said, hindered the employment of skilled disabled people. She said companies and organisations would benefit from hiring disabled people as they would learn about and understand the challenges faced by the disabled.
