Water flowing down 16th Avenue not municipal – Mr Gadebe

"The water that is currently leaking from the sidewalk is not drinking water, but groundwater."

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has provided comment on the water flowing down Sixteenth Avenue in Edenvale.

The NEWS reported in its February 22 edition in the article, Council begins fixing water leak, that the EMM had begun repair work on the water leaking on the pavement.

It was reported that the municipality had dug three exploratory inspection holes as part of the repair process.

In the article the concerns of a local resident, as well as those of the local ward councillor, were also highlighted.

Ms Catherine Donelly, the resident whose property is most affected by the seeping water, said the ground had become a soggy mess because of it.

Mr Themba Gadebe, spokesperson and senior media manager of the EMM, has since commented that the leaks have been repaired.

He said the damaged pipe would be replaced.

Mr Gadebe assured community members that the water leaking down Sixteenth Avenue was not municipal water. “The water that is currently leaking from the sidewalk is not drinking water, but groundwater,” said the EMM spokesperson.
