City of Joburg warns of flash floods

JOBURG — The City of Johannesburg says it is monitoring dangers possible in the rainy weather.

Today’s rainy weather is causing isolated flooding in certain low-lying parts of Johannesburg.

Public Safety MMC within the City of Johannesburg, Michael Sun, is urging motorists to reduce their speed on the wet roads and avoid low-lying areas that are prone to flash flooding.

Some of the roads affected are Witkoppen Road in Paulshof, Roosevelt Road in Alexandra and the low-level bridge on River Road, and the Belgrave bridge in Bryanston.

The South African Weather Services predicted 65mm of rainfall for Johannesburg today which could cause flash floods, Sun added.

The Department of Public Safety’s Disaster Management Centre was activated last week Friday and will continue to monitor the situation across the City.

In cases of emergency, however, call 10177 for assistance.

The city was hit with flash floods last year November after a cloud break over the northern and north-eastern suburbs. The storm led to cars being submerged on the highway and left numerous people stranded and unable to get home. Tragically, a three-year-old girl was swept away.
