AACL offering free sterilisations on World Spay Day
Spaying female animals at an early age greatly reduces their risk of developing mammary cancer later in life.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg will celebrate World Spay Day on February 28 by offering free sterilisations to welfare clients.
Sterilisation of pets carries multiple benefits.
Spaying female animals at an early age greatly reduces their risk of developing mammary cancer later in life.
It also eliminates the risks of ovarian and uterine cancer, as well as pyometra, a common life-threatening infection of the uterus.
In male dogs, castration eliminates the possibility of testicular cancer and may reduce the incidence of prostate cancer.
Sterilised animals are less likely to roam, which also makes them less likely to be involved in motor vehicle accidents, get attacked by stray animals or contract diseases, such as Transmissible Venereal Tumour virus in dogs or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus in cats.
Of major importance to animal welfare societies worldwide is population control.
Unplanned litters of kittens and puppies lead to an enormous pet overpopulation problem.
This leads to shelters being filled to capacity and often leaves many animals living a sad and lonely life waiting for a forever family that may never come.

To receive free sterilisation of your pets on World Spay Day, you must be a client of the AACL veterinary hospital and qualify for welfare assistance.
Your pets must be brought in for a clinical examination and vaccination no less than two weeks prior to the day.
Space is limited and limitations could be placed on the number of pets from a household that will be accommodated.
