Community cleans up Horwood’s Farm

"Ultimately I would love to see the park improved so that the community makes more use of it."

With the assistance of community members, Clr Heather Hart of ward 18 hopes to improve the condition of Horwood’s Farm.

Through the efforts of the groups, Friends of Horwood’s Farm and Friends of the Homestead, Clr Hart believes the park can be restored.

“Ultimately I would love to see the park improved so that the community makes more use of it,” said Clr Hart.

On February 4, community members and Clr Hart spent their morning at the park clearing sand off the pathways to make it more appealing.

Once more has been done to the park and more pathways have been cleared, Clr Hart said the park will be an ideal location for a park run.

In order to restore the park, the two groups will have different roles at the park.

Clr Hart said the Friends of the Homestead will focus on the restoration of the homestead and will work alongside the City of Ekurhuleni to restore the heritage site, while Friends of Horwood’s Farm will focus on developing the rest of the park and assist the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in maintaining the park.

Some of the options for the use of the homestead which have been considered include:

* A museum for Edenvale and the surrounding areas.

* A conference centre.

* A second community centre which will focus more on cultural activities.

Clr Hart hopes to see more frequent maintenance at the park and the painting of the market stalls.

Once the stalls have been redone Clr Hart hopes to see more frequent markets at Horwood’s Farm.
