The Bunny Hop Haven and Chicken Run is moving and its managers could not be more excited.
In 2016, Ms Andy Berzen and Ms Kelly Smit said the centre, a sanctuary for small farm animals, was facing closure if help did not come fast.
Affectionately known to the community as Bunny Hop, the centre will move from its current grounds along Club Street near Huddle Park, to the Observatory Sports Club at the top of Sylvia’s Pass.
Ms Smit, a Bedfordview resident, is a marketing manager at the centre, which is the brainchild of Ms Berzen.
She volunteers her time at the animal shelter to ensure the welfare of the animals.
The centre hosts children of all ages on weekends.
“We also aim to connect children with animals.We teach children how to care for their animals at home. We also host school children who are interested in interacting with bunnies and getting to know more about them,” said Ms Berzen.
The Bunny Hop is a non-profit organisation and rescues farm animals from across Joburg.
Ms Smit said with the move comes the financing of building materials for the construction of a brand new bunny hop.
“We urge members of the community to help us build a bigger and even better Bunny Hop. Our new space is perfect for what we are trying to do. We ask that those who are able to assist, come forward and help,” said Ms Smit.
She said people were skeptical to visit the shelter previously because of its current location.
“Also part of the problem for us was that the space was a wetland and not fully secured. We don’t do this for profit, so all proceeds from visitors, go towards the running of the centre,” said Ms Smit.
She said after rescuing bunnies, she takes home the smaller and sick ones and brings them into the centre once they are strong enough.
Ms Smit said the move is expected to be complete within the next three months.
