Man caught drinking in street shoots at cops

JEPPESTOWN – A suspect was arrested by Jeppe police and is expected to appear in court.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the corner of Doran and Boom streets in Jeppestown for possession of an unlicensed firearm on 28 January during a stop-and-search operation that also targeted illegal shebeens and taverns.

“While officers were patrolling in Jeppestown at around 10.30pm, they came across a group of men drinking. One of the men took out a firearm and shot at the police two times,” said Jeppe police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyai.

Officers called for backup and arrested the suspect. He was taken to Jeppe Police Station where he was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and attempted murder.

Police also confiscated alcohol from illegal shebeens and taverns in the vicinity. “Drugs believed to be nyaope were found hidden behind a counter inside a bakery. No one was arrested,” said Munyai.
