Christmas is about family and sharing, and this caring sentiment was evident when the community came together to help a destitute man, Fanwell Mncube, whose house burnt down in Malvern just before Christmas Day.
After hearing about the unfortunate incident, the ANC Cyrildene sub-branch stepped in to help. “We saw the dire situation Fanwell Mncube was in and as a community, we could not sit and let him have a miserable Christmas. He needed our help and Christmas is all about sharing and giving,” said Jenny Wu of the sub-branch.

According to Mncube, he was at work when the fire broke out. “I was called by my neighbours to come home because my house was on fire. It seems like the fire was caused by an electrical fault.”
Mncube added that he was touched by what the ANC Cyrildene sub-branch did for him. The branch donated R12 000 for the house repairs and to contribute to other basic needs. The hand-over of the donation was attended by Connie Bapela ANC regional deputy chairperson and community members.
“This is our way of saying he should not go hungry over the festive season and [we wanted to] help him to get on his feet. We must support each other as the community through difficult times. We are members of the community before we are anything else,” added Wu.
Mncube said helping others out of the goodness of your heart bears good fruits. “I’m always helping out in the community and I do that because I love helping others. I never thought in times of need that the community would also come to my rescue and also help me. I’m very thankful and God bless them.”
