Denver settlement rebuilding

DENVER – Denver informal settlement fire victims slowly rebuild their homes

The cause of a fire which destroyed 77 shacks in Denver informal settlement on 2 January remains unknown. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

A number of residents were affected by the fire and many of them could not save their belongings because they were not home at the time.

PR councillor Alison Roberts asked for assistance with donations. She requested donations from residents and local business. “I thank everyone who donated. Residents heard my plea and came to my aid when I requested help. This fire has happened at the most terrible time. Children are going back to school and they have nothing.

“It’s amazing how residents have supported those affected by the fire. I’m still receiving donations and that means we can even share with residents from George Goch who have also just experienced a fire that destroyed 15 shacks.”

She said they were desperate for donations of men’s clothing.

The settlement residents are rebuilding their homes one day at a time and said they are grateful for all the help they have received from the donors.

Disaster Management has been part of the rebuilding process and is providing what is needed for the residents to be able to rebuild.
