St Benedict’s learners excel in maths

She said learners are encouraged to extend themselves by taking part in Olympiads.

Following the recent release of the 2016 IEB matric results, St Benedict’s College has congratulated its learners on their performance.

Head of marketing, Ms Chantelle Burgin, said the school is proud of the learners’ performance in the last exams.

“We are proud of our recent matric mathematics achievements. With 101 St Benedict’s candidates writing the IEB Core Maths papers, 52 candidates achieved A’s and the subject average was 76.1 percent, which is above the IEB average of 67.36 percent,” said Ms Burgin.

Gavin Li is the school’s top learner in core mathematics, with 100 percent.

Ms Burgin said St Benedict’s has consistently achieved outstanding results for mathematics, fulfilling its vision to prepare its boys to take part in the world economy.

“Our aim is to maximise the number of boys matriculating with core maths, with each boy achieving his potential. Each year, more than 80 percent of our boys write core maths and achieve an average above 70 percent. Typically, one in three boys achieves a distinction. We believe that with excellent teaching, strategic remediation and appropriate practice, all boys can achieve,” she said.

Ms Burgin said in Grade 12, revision maths camps consolidate all the concepts required for final exams.

At the school, learners who are not assured of passing core maths are afforded the opportunity of registering for both core maths and maths literacy in Grade 12.

“These learners often still achieve solid core maths results as a result of the reduced pressure. They can also elect to use their maths literacy results for university entrance if core maths is not a prerequisite for their courses. Part of our success is rooted in our growing Advanced Programme Mathematics (AP Maths) course, with 52 learners writing this subject in 2016. Our philosophy is to expose as many of the learners as possible to the rigour required to prepare them for tertiary studies in maths, science and engineering. AP maths is carefully woven into the teaching of core maths and is supplemented with additional lessons and revision camps,” said Ms Burgin.

She said learners are encouraged to extend themselves by taking part in Olympiads.

In 2016, St Benedict’s 2016 exemption rate was 96 percent.
