The Bedfordview SAPS called on motorists and residents to refrain from giving money to beggars at intersections. This came after three men were arrested in July this year connection to two crimes in the area. The spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, then said the men were arrested for different crimes. “Two of them were arrested in connection with the rape of a 17-year-old girl, while one was nabbed for robbing and stabbing a woman,” said W/O Nhlabathi.
2. Missing: Devyn Bredenkamp – Edenglen High School pupil
Edenglen High School pupil, Devyn Bredenkamp went missing on February 29. The Edenvale Community Police Forum later reported he had been found.
3. Watch: Five minute burglary in Illiondale, Edenvale
Burglars took only five minutes to break down a motorised gate and gain access to a house in Illiondale, Edenvale on March 20. The men made off with television sets, lap top computers and jewellery.
4. Missing woman’s body recovered
Emotions ran high on the morning of November 12 when the body of Caroline Sithile (34), reported missing following the November 9 floods, was found. She was pregnant at the time of her death. The NEWS was told her last message to family members was, “I am trapped. I cannot get out.” Her car was found the previous day. Her body was discovered further down the spruit along Dickie Fritz Avenue in Edenvale after informal recyclers, looking for plastic, noticed it.
5. Jeppe Old Boys come out in support of teacher
Numerous Jeppe Old Boys stepped up to show support for the teacher who made headline news in September this year after a video, showing the teacher having an outburst, surfaced. In the video, which appears to be taken from a cellular phone by one of the learners in the class‚ the teacher is screaming at a pupil, using inappropriate language. She also questions the pupil on where his book and notes are.
6. Man jumps to death off bridge at Gillooly’s Interchange
On January 6 this year, the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster Management Service (DEMS), Mr William Ntladi, confirmed that a man, believed to be in his late 40s, fell to his death from the flyover bridge at Gillooly’s Interchange. It was believed that the man drove to the area before parking his vehicle and walking onto the bridge, shortly before the incident occurred.
7. Breaking News: Two arrested following Bedfordview shoot-out
On September 13, two men were arrested following a shoot-out in Bedfordview. According to information from the scene, a woman was followed to her house from Eastgate Shopping Centre and robbed. The men took a Rolex watch as well as their victim’s cellular phone. The victim’s husband then fired shots at the suspects and they fled on foot. One of the men were arrested close to the scene while a second was arrested after he collapsed on Pine Road.
8. Just In – Ekurhuleni to implement water rationing from Monday
The drought this year saw the City of Ekurhuleni announcing on November 4, the implementation of water rationing measures in an effort to save water. “The City has no choice but to take this drastic step as voluntary water saving measures by residents have averaged a savings rate of about 3.5 percent a week, a far cry from the required 15 percent,” said EMM spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, at the time.
9. Breaking News – One person confirmed dead after Avenues shooting
One person died as a result of a shooting in the Edenvale Avenues on August 31. Vanessa Dreyer, a mother of two, was shot and killed in the Edenvale Avenues. “The wife and husband were in the car when they were blocked in the driveway by a white Mercedes-Benz. More than two suspects were involved,” said Capt Olckers at the time. He said the armed suspects attempted to rob the couple. “It is alleged that a shootout took place between the husband and the suspects,” said Capt Olckers, then said.
Family speaks out after five minute burglary – Following a third serious crime incident at their home in Price Road, Illiondale, the Seosankar family said their security provider is unable to cope in the area.
