"The taxi driver refused to produce a driver's license and accused my girlfriend of somehow stealing it during the accident."

A motorist accused the SAPS of being unhelpful after he was involved in a collision with a taxi.

The collision occurred on the evening of December 11, at the intersection of Sandvale/Brabazon and Driefontein roads.

Mr Jarryd Else said the taxi was speeding and collided into the side of his vehicle.

“Fortunately we walked away with minor injuries,” said Mr Else.

He said after exiting his vehicle, he and those who were travelling with him, approached the taxi which he said, “reeked of alcohol.”

“The taxi driver refused to produce a driver’s license and accused my girlfriend of somehow stealing it during the accident,” said Mr Else.

He alleged that when he tried to get the licences from the taxi driver, he and passengers from the vehicle were swarmed by onlookers.

He alleged that he, his father and a witness who had helped him out of his car, were assaulted.

He said SAPS members arrived at the scene and allegedly told the EMPD officers who were at the scene to leave.

“After asking the police for a breathalyzer, or any form of test to prove there was alcohol abuse involved, the police told us they weren’t legally allowed to test us. They said it was the EPMD’s job, yet they forced them off the scene,” said Mr Else.

He said the officers refused to give their names and badge numbers.

“After asking multiple times for advice on the accident report, the police officer ripped the page away from me saying he’ll finish it himself,” said Mr Else.

Mr Else believes the SAPS officers were from the Edenvale Police Station.

“I asked people around the accident scene where the police officers were from and they said the Edenvale SAPS,” said Mr Else.

He said the Sebenza SAPS did attend the scene but could not assist as it was not their area.

Captain Jean Olckers, the spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, said the matter is under investigation.

He said currently the Edenvale SAPS is investigating whether officers from the Edenvale Police Station had attended the scene.

“The Edenvale SAPS takes service delivery seriously,” said Capt Olckers.

Mr Else also met with Colonel Robbie Roberts, the station commander of the Edenvale SAPS on December 13.

Col Roberts confirmed that he met with Mr Else and said an internal investigation has been launched.
