A single mother in Observatory is asking for help from the community as she is unable to pay her water debt.
“We have been without water for three months. The taps are dry. This is affecting my family negatively, especially my 11-year-old son. We have to depend on friends to do our laundry,” said Colleen Tylor, who added that life has been difficult for her as being a widow, everything depends on her.
“I’m not denying the fact that I owe the municipality, it’s just I cannot afford the required amount. I have tried to explain my situation but have not received any assistance,” she said.
According to Tylor, her situation has come to the point where she can’t even take a regular bath. “The taps are dry, not even a little drop! I’m not even receiving the free water that is given to residents.
“I’m not saying I’m special and that I should not pay, I’m asking for time and some consideration. My financial situation is not well and I cannot afford the required 50 per cent of the debt to be able to pay the amount.”
According to her, she has been sent from pillar to post.
Ward 66 councillor Carlos da Rocha, said he is aware of the case but could not assist because the water was cut off due to non-payment of the account. “I spoke to Tylor and advised her to make payment arrangements. She further indicated she could not pay a deposit to reinstate the account and, unfortunately, if a resident does not make arrangements when in debt, my hands are tied,” said Da Rocha.
Tylor said she is not asking for a free card but is asking for any assistance. “I have tried to pay the amount I made arrangements to pay, but it was not enough. I have not been well, which is also a reason I could not pay as I was not working. I’m really struggling and in need of help,” she pleaded.
