Christmas market helps generate funds for animal charities

"It is important to raise as many funds as possible."

The Tails and Whiskers Charity shop in Edenvale recently held a Charlies Christmas Market to help generate funds for their beneficiaries.

The market, which was held on November 26, was also held to pay tribute to to Charlie, a rescue Boxer known to the community. Charlie died four months ago after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

Ms Renee Plain*, a staff member of the charity shop and an ex SPCA inspector, said with the festive season coming up many charities needed some financial assistance and that was the main reason behind the Christmas market.

“It is important to raise as many funds as possible as our beneficiaries have approximately 3 000 animals between them, from dogs, cats, chickens and donkeys. Funds raised go towards helping with the veterinary bills and food,” said Renee.

Beneficiaries of the charity shop are:

  •  Cat Village.
  •  Purrpaws for Life.
  •  Happy Yappers.
  •  Hellen White in the Community.

Various charities had items for sale at the market, such as second hand items and clothes.

The items sold by the animal charities generated funds for each charity.

The way in which the charity works is that members of the community donate items to the charity shop and decide which beneficiaries the proceeds go to.

“Clothing automatically goes to the house account to helps pay the overheads. We have been very fortunate to have some members of the community who donated to the house account on a regular basis,” said Renee.

Renee said many community members visit the charity shop regularly

She said at the shop, staff members also teach youngsters how to approach dogs and animals.
