Sacred Heart gets digi-wise

Observatory – Sacred Heart College encouraging learners to have interest in coding

Sacred Heart College hosted a coding workshop on 1 to 2 December.

The workshop was conducted by head of the college, Colin Northmore. The aim of the workshop was to get the youngsters interested in coding and understand how programming works.

“We don’t want the learners to only be end-users but we also want them to be interested in coding and also create their own programs. We are preparing children for the future, to do jobs that do not exist yet, using technology that has still to be invented,” said Northmore.

Sacred Heart has been one of the schools that has embraced technology and has been encouraging the children and teachers to find innovative ways to make learning fun. The workshop accommodated beginners to the advanced.

They also had an opportunity to visit the Virtual Reality Centre in Bedfordview. The eager youngsters said the workshop has opened their minds to new possibilities in terms of how technology can be used to enhance learning in the classroom.

Lynn Walker, marketing coordinator said, “As a school, we always want to expose our learners to different elements that will help them academically, and when our head of college wanted to do this workshop, we were delighted. The workshop will introduce a different world to the learners.”

Northmore added, “Workshops like this are important for the learner as we are moving more to the digital world, giving them tools like coding will arm them with information and also help in deciding career paths.”
