Warming the hearts of children

Ms Mongalo Ngoasheng, a social auxiliary work student at Thembalami, had never knitted before the start of the project, but after a few lessons from some patient gogos, managed to complete seven Teddies.

Thembalami Care Centre residents, staff and gogos who are part of the Zamokuhle outreach programme and volunteers, are destined to warm the hearts of children who are spending the festive season in hospital.

When Mr Max Green from the Beit Emanuel Synagogue in Johannesburg approached the Rand Aid-run care centre to see if they would knit Teddies for the congregation’s Ubuntu Bears outreach project, he was overwhelmed by the response.

“I had no sooner walked in the door with the wool, and they were casting on,” he said.

On November 23, Mr Green and fellow synagogue care committee member Ms Diane Fine arrived to take collection of the 103 bears the care centre had made. These, and Teddies being made by other organisations, will be handed out to paediatric ward patients before Christmas.
