Residents transform dumping space into vegetable garden

CLEVELAND – Residents at Jumpers informal settlement benefit from their own vegetable garden.

Residents of Jumpers informal settlement started a vegetable garden which will be used as a source of food and should help reduce financial problems.

The informal settlement leader, Nomphelo Zozo said she started the vegetable garden in 2013 with other residents of the community. “This used to be a dumping space. Most of the residents don’t work and food is expensive, so I thought of cleaning up the area and starting a vegetable garden. I started this vegetable garden in 2013 together with other residents of Jumpers.”

Zozo said she is currently unemployed and doing nothing at all is not a solution. “Having a job doesn’t mean signing a contract at a particular workplace. This is our job because most of us have nothing to do every day,” she said.

She encourages other residents to join and plant their own vegetables. She said the vegetable garden can help the residents save money. “This garden will help everyone to save. We can’t afford to buy meat all the time.”
