City of Ekurhuleni rewarded for promoting good corporate governance

The city's efforts at promoting good corporate governance have not gone unnoticed

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Risk Management Department recently received two awards from two prominent independent bodies.

These bodies are at the centre of promoting governance, risk and compliance management in South Africa.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said the city’s efforts at promoting good corporate governance have not gone unnoticed.

The Chartered Institute of Government Finance, Audit and Risk Officers (CIGFARO/IMFO) awarded the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality a Clean Administration Award to the Risk Management Unit for subscribing to clean audit processes for the 2015/16 financial year.

The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) awarded the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality an Industry Initiative Award: Government and Public Services for outstanding contribution towards risk management.

At the same event, Mr Musa Khumalo, the chief risk officer, was a runner-up for the IRMSA Risk Manager of the Year award.

Mr Musawakhe Khumalo, chief risk officer said, “It is indeed a great honour for the municipality, through the Risk Management Department, to receive these awards and to be recognised amongst the best leaders in governance, both at a municipal level as well as the public sector at large. We owe this success to many of our stakeholders throughout the institution who continue to support our efforts. Such achievements continue to challenge us to do better and remain relevant to the needs of the institution and our communities. Central to building confidence in the institution is ensuring sustained levels of good governance.”

Mr Khumalo said the City of Ekurhuleni will continue to strive towards building an accountable, transparent and ethical government. With two consecutive clean audits, the metro understands the importance of ensuring a clean administration built on solid government.
