Home in dire need of help

OBSERVATORY – Girls' home is pleading for financial assistance.

Uitkoms Home for Girls in Observatory is pleading for donations from local community members and businesses.

The home’s Lauren da Rocha said they held a number of charity events to raise funds. “We had a golf day on 14 September and a ladies high tea where we raised money for the home. The golf day was more successful, we raised R30 000 on the day,” said Da Rocha.

The girls also make blankets and colouring-in books which help with income for the home. “The materials for the blanket lessons were donated by the church which gave the lessons, and the blankets made during the lessons were given to the girls. For the fundraising blankets, we sourced shops where we could get the material at a reasonable rate and purchased it,” said Da Rocha.

“We are selling them each for R180.”

She said the home would appreciate donations. “Any donations of toiletries, clothing, cleaning materials, and non-perishable food,” she said.

“We would also appreciate items which can be sold at jumble sales.”

The home is a registered child and youth care centre that provides shelter, protection, professional counselling and life guidance to young women from disadvantaged backgrounds.
