Suspect nabbed for possession of stolen goods

KENSINGTON – A 33-year-old man was arrested for possession of stolen property in Kensington.

Jeppe police officers arrested a 33-year-old man for possession of stolen property in Kensington on 10 November after he allegedly purchased stolen goods taken during a business robbery at OK Furniture Shop in Primrose.

According to Jeppe Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyai, the driver of the truck used to transport the stolen items told police he was hired to do so and later led officers to where the stolen goods were offloaded.

During the robbery, a security guard and staff members of the shop who were closing for the day were accosted by seven men, allegedly wielding firearms.

The suspects allegedly locked the victims inside an office and loaded a plasma TV, home theatre system, microwave ovens, car radios and cellphones into a truck.

“[The driver] was told to stay inside the truck while the suspects were loading the goods. He was later told to drive the truck, which was followed by two cars with the seven armed men inside,” said Munyai.

“When they arrived in Kensington, he got out of the truck to assist the suspects to offload the goods and he was paid for transporting them. While on his way back to Primrose he saw a police van from Germiston Police Station and stopped the officers in the vehicle. He told the officers what had happened and took them to the house where the goods were allegedly offloaded.”

On their way to the house in Kensington, the two officers called for back-up from other police stations including Jeppe Police Station.

“Upon their arrival, they found the man who allegedly bought the goods from the suspects. Some of the plasma TVs, home theatre systems and microwave ovens were found in the house. Most of the stolen goods were not found,” said Munyai.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Jeppe Police Station where he was charged with possession of stolen property.

“A case of business robbery is being investigated at the Primrose Police Station. The suspects are still at large,” said Munyai.
