Troyeville Primary are Eco-warriors

Troyeville – Troyeville Primary School are Pikitup Eco-Rangers for 2016

Troyeville Primary School was crowned Pikitup Eco-Rangers 2016. The school was awarded R25 000.

The Pikitup Eco-Rangers programme empowers South Africa’s youth by making them aware of the environmental issues facing them and their communities. “It’s important to teach kids the benefits of recycling from a young age in order to pave a healthier and cleaner future for them,” said Smith Solomon Kelomo, Education Awareness and Community Development manager at Pikitup.

Pikitup, partnered with HDI Youth Marketeers, a company that helps brands make meaningful, measureable and magical differences in the lives and fortunes of the youth. They developed an engaging roadshow that educated pupils about the value and importance of recycling in a fun and interactive, superhero theatre show called the Pikitup Eco-Rangers.

“The Eco-Rangers have really influenced the school to think green. They have been a shining example to others to take care of the environment, making it a norm. We are very proud of them as a school,” said teacher, Charmaine Steenkamp.

The programme visited over 300 schools in the Gauteng region, impacting over 30 000 children. During the shows, youngsters got the opportunity to enter the Pitch in and Ppikitup School Environment Competition.

They had to identify an environmental problem at their school, research the problem and devise a solution for it. From those findings, the pupils had to build a model or a process that showcases how this issue will be resolved. “Some of the ideas that were entered were really amazing, young people are more creative than ever before,” said Didi Kolane, Pikitup account manager at HDI.

Kelomo stressed to the pupils the importance of recycling and how it can save the earth.

“It was difficult to select 16 winning schools out of all the entries. They will grow up knowing that recycling is the norm and not another painful exercise. We would like to see our youth develop environmentally-friendly values and behaviours.”
