Domestic workers rewarded

The workers were awarded certificates in appreciation of their commitment to fighting crime.

Last Thursday was a day to remember for domestic workers and gardeners who attended the Making a Difference (MAD) Domestic Watch sessions throughout the year.
The workers were awarded certificates in appreciation of their commitment to fighting crime.
Founder, Ms Penny Steyn, hosts sessions with domestic workers and gardeners across Johannesburg on a monthly basis.
“During these sessions I talk to my people about different methods used by criminals to gain access to the homes that they work and spend of their time in. They are the first in line when criminals strike. I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for them to know what to do and how to behave in an emergency,” said Ms Steyn.
She said the event is one of the highlights for all MAD attendees.
“This is when we let our hair down and dance, laugh and enjoy a meal together. They get to dress up and make up for the day. It’s a big deal for us. It is important that we show gratitude for the time they take to come through and listen, as well as interact with us. It shows they are committed to the fight against crime,” said Ms Steyn.
Affectionately known as MAD Penny, Ms Steyn offers the lessons at no charge.
She said new lessons for 2017 will begin in January.
“I will issue the dates in due course,” she said.
In Bedfordview, domestic workers and gardeners received Christmas hampers from the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) and the SAPS.
Ms Carol Zondi said she loves attending MAD sessions to empower herself.
“I am grateful for the time Pens [Ms Steyn] spends with us every month. The knowledge she shares with us will be treasured for many years to come. We get to know what and how criminals think so we can outsmart them. I love the power that she awakens within us,” said Ms Zondi.
