The fallen remembered on Armistice Day

Kensington – Jeppe Boys pay their respects to those who died in the two world wars.

Jeppe High School for Boys held its annual Armistice Day memorial service at the school on 11 November.

Armistice Day has been held annually for the past 94 years and honours those who fought in WWI and WWII.

Even though the weather was windy and rainy, friends and family gathered to honour and remember loved ones. The service was attended by representatives of other Jeppe schools and numerous alumni. The event was also attended by representatives of the Dickie Fritz Moth Shellhole, which was named after two Jeppe masters who lost their lives in Libya during WWII.

Members of the South African National Defence Force, South African Navy, South African Legion of Military Veterans and those who served during the border conflict, all attended. Reverend Gavin Lock officiated at the service. His sermon focused on remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in fighting against tyranny so that we can all appreciate the freedom we enjoy today.

The Jeppe boys who are members of the St John’s Ambulance Cadet Corps and the South African Scout Association took part in a parade before the service began.

The parade formed a guard of honour at the WWI memorial for the duration of the service. The Jeppe Pipe Band, which is the oldest in the country, led the parade.

Guests, family and friends had the opportunity to lay wreaths and pay their respects. The programme was cut short on account of the weather.
