The M1 upgrade completion will now be delayed to September next year due to labour unrest that took place between April and August this year.
According to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), the project which began in February this year, is still within its R210-million budget, despite all the challenges faced over the past couple of months.
Addressing the media, Johannesburg MMC for Transport Helen Makhuba requested patience from all road users as delays will affect traffic and urged commuters to consider public transport or alternative routes.
Here are some of the changes that can be expected:
- Oxford Road offramp from M1 travelling northbound will be closed from March next year.
- M1 traffic in Killarney and St Andrews will be diverted to the southbound carriageway with 2 lanes open to traffic in both directions.
- Some lanes on the Double Decker and M1 section between Killarney and St Andrews will be closed at off-peak hours, at night and on weekends for construction work.
- Henry Nxumalo Road will have one lane temporarily reduced to accommodate rehabilitation of the Double Decker bridges from 30 November to 15 January.
The JRA has called on road users to familiarise themselves with the lane reductions and to plan their journeys in advance.
