Certificate ceremony planned for domestic workers

Ms Steyn said domestic workers and gardeners are the first in line when robbers strike.

Come November 17, domestic workers and gardeners from suburbs around Johannesburg will get together for the MAD Domestic Watch award ceremony.
Ms Penny Steyn, the founder and facilitator of Making A Difference (MAD) Domestic Watch, will hand over certificates to domestic workers and gardeners to thank them for their commitment to fighting crime.
She said the event will be an afternoon of networking, interaction and fun.
Domestic workers and gardeners who attended more than five sessions will receive certificates on the day.
Ms Steyn, affectionately known as MAD Penny, thanked employers who paid the entrance fees for their staff members.
“This day is important to me and to their staff. It will be jam-packed, full of fun, music and dance. The money will cover expenses. A great luncheon has also been planned afterwards,” said Ms Steyn.
She thanked residents who allowed their staff members to attend the meetings.
Ms Steyn said domestic workers and gardeners are the first in line when robbers strike.
“They are the first to be tied up because often they know where the guns, jewellery and valuables are. This is why I want them to be empowered to behave correctly and to not get harmed during a crime incident. I would also like to thank them for being the eyes and ears of the police in their respective streets,” said Ms Steyn.
Throughout the year, Ms Steyn meets domestic workers and gardeners for monthly sessions.
The sessions cover varying topics, ranging from domestic abuse, criminals’ modus operandi as well as mistakes that allow crimes of opportunity.
She also talks about what convicted gang members had to say about crime committed in the suburbs.
Invited guests on the day include Gauteng premier Mr David Makhura, Minister of Police Nathi Nhleko and the Acting National Commissioner of Police General Khomotso Phahlane.
Ward councillors from all relevant suburbs will also be present on the day.
The event will take place at the Rosebank Union Church.
