A feast of religion

OBSERVATORY – Sacred Heart College has a religious exhibition to celebrate different religions

Sacred Heart College had a Grade 6 exhibition of world religions.

Over a period of five weeks, pupils engaged in a research project that covered content knowledge, skills and values or attitudes as part of their curriculum.

In preparation for this experience of project-based learning, the pupils were taught a number of research and writing skills. The exhibition was held on Feast Day, a Sacred Heart celebration. “Through the process of sharing and celebrating the various traditions found in our South African community, we want to instil greater respect for, and understanding of, people’s beliefs and traditions in the hope that [pupils] will become people who will embrace other cultures and traditions with the dignity and respect they deserve. Our focus is nation-building,” said Lynn Walker, Sacred Heart marketing coordinator.

Walker said the rainbow nation of South Africa, like much of the world, is a country of religious difference. “As a community, we search for ways to live together in harmony, mutual respect and understanding.” She said in order to do this, the country needs to understand its own religious traditions, as these are the basis of a belief systems and, therefore, approach to life.

“Once we understand our own beliefs and traditions, we need to explore one another’s traditions in order to appreciate better their spiritual richness and power to give meaning to life,” concluded Walker.
