SAPS clamps down on liquor laws

"Alcohol is one of the biggest contributors to crime."

Following a joint operation, three liquor outlets in Edenvale have been temporarily shut for not abiding by the regulations and laws that govern the outlets.
According to Colonel Robbie Roberts, the station commander of the Edenvale SAPS, the operation included the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) and representatives from the EMM’s Health Department.
Col Roberts said the three outlets did not comply with health and safety regulations.
“The three outlets have been temporarily closed until they rectify their transgressions,” said Col Roberts.
He said a restaurant, a tavern and a pool club were closed.
The recent clamp-down on liquor outlets has been done to ensure that liquor outlets are in fact legitimate and are abiding by the law.
“Alcohol is one of the biggest contributors to crime,” said Col Roberts.
“Liquor outlets must ensure they abide by all the regulations that govern them,” said Col Roberts.
He said liquor outlets cannot take shortcuts with the law.
