Operations launched to fight crime

When alcohol is involved, other crimes such as drunken driving, drug-related activities and domestic abuse occur.

Operations to reduce crime and create a safer community were conducted over the weekend of October 29.
Colonel Robbie Roberts, the Edenvale SAPS station commander, said two operations were held, one on October 28 and the other on October 29.
The first operation saw a combined effort from the Edenvale SAPS, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and the Edenvale Community Police Forum.
Col Roberts said a road block was conducted and 15 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
He said two drug-related arrests were also made on the evening of the 28th.
The second operation which took place over the weekend was a crime prevention operation conducted by the SAPS.
Col Roberts said the operation resulted in three drug-related arrests and the arrest of foreign nationals who had the incorrect paperwork.
Alongside the two operations, the Edenvale SAPS conducted an inspection of local liquor stores to ensure the stores were complying with the National Liquor Act.
Col Roberts said the reason for the focus on liquor legislation is because the SAPS recently received a large number of noise complaints and because alcohol contributes to crime.
He said when alcohol is involved, other crimes such as drunken driving, drug-related activities and domestic abuse occur.
A warning is given to the business owner if the SAPS conducts an inspection and discovers a contravention.
Col Roberts said the business owners then have 21 days to ensure that everything is in order and if not, the issue is escalated to a provincial level.
“Businesses must abide by the regulation pertaining to their specific licences,” said Col Roberts.
