Empower the lives of others and take part in the annual Nappy Run

“Having to go without nappies violates a child’s dignity."

The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA) is calling upon community members to be part of their annual Nappy Run.

The Edenvale-based organisation aims to raise awareness about the rights of children with disabilities and the challenges they face. The group aims to collect nappies for the children through the campaign.

At last year’s campaign the NCPPDSA collected 25 000 nappies which were distributed to families and care centres for children with disabilities throughout South Africa.

This year the NCPPDSA hopes to double that amount and collect 50 000 nappies.

National Director of NCPPDSA, Ms Therina Wentzel, founded the Nappy Run six years ago in order to empower and give disabled children dignity.

“Bladder and bowel control is often associated with various types of disabilities. Children with disabilities have a high need for nappies.” said Ms Wentzel.

She said often nappies are still needed when the children reach their teens.

“Having to go without nappies violates a child’s dignity, it is degrading, causes discomfort and is also unhygienic,” said Ms Wentzel.

The 5km fun walk/run will be held at the Johannesburg Zoo in Parktown.

Entry into the event walk will cost R90 for adults and R45 for children 4 to 12 years old.

Children younger than four years old enter free of charge.

The event will be held on November 5. Registration will take place from 7:30am until 8:30am and the run will start at 9am

Members of the public are welcome to make donations of nappy packs or alternatively donate Nappy Rands on the website www.nappyrun.org.za.

All funds raised through the campaign will go towards nappies for the campaign’s beneficiaries.

“We call on everyone in Johannesburg to walk/run the 5km for the empowerment of children with disabilities,” said Ms Wentzel.

Ms Wentzel urged community members to join in and accessorise, using a cloth nappy to follow the theme.

Tickets to the event can be purchased online at www.nappyrun.org.za or during registration on the morning of the event.
