Domestic workers get together for last MAD session

Ms Steyn said people should note that criminals will get caught one way or another.

Bedfordview’s domestic workers and gardeners came together last Wednesday for the last MAD Domestic Watch session for 2016.

The session was held at the Bedfordview Methodist Church.

This month’s topic covered interviews with convicted criminals.

Founder Ms Penny Steyn said she spoke to a convicted criminal who was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for crimes ranging from housebreaking and hijacking.

“This man shared with me interesting information about the modus operandi, as well as the methods criminals use to gain access into homes and businesses. He also told me about things that make criminals nervous,” said Ms Steyn.

Affectionately known as MAD Penny, Ms Steyn said with the festive season fast approaching, crime also increases.

“There are two types of criminals; those who operate in gangs and those who commit crimes of opportunity. I need all my people to be aware of methods used by any criminal. Domestic workers and gardeners are usually first in line when criminals attack. I am here to make sure you know what to do and how to be safe,” said Ms Steyn.

She said before targeting a property, the criminals first study the area.

“They don’t just strike, they walk the suburb and get to know the people and their routines. During my interview with the convict he told me that sometimes they even try to get close to female staff. They approach them, ask them out on a date. Once the domestic worker trusts them, they will ‘visit’ the property. This they did in the Northern suburbs and once the man had knowledge of the systems in place within the home, his fellow gang members struck,” she said.

Ms Steyn said people should note that criminals will get caught one way or another.

“Sometimes within an hour of an incident, other times years, but they will get caught. If they are not arrested, they will die during a shootout with the police. There is a need to teach our men not to try and be heroes. Do not fight criminals. They are nervous and if you try get in their way, they will shoot you. Some of these men have confessed to,” said Ms Steyn.

She said residents with children should exercise caution.

“Children tend to give out information to criminals unknowingly. Under no circumstances should children be allowed to answer the door bell, let alone handle keys for the property. If they are playing outside, always make sure they are supervised,” said Ms Steyn.
